Growing up in Washington, DC
Every great story has a beginning.
Mine started in Southeast Washington D.C. A place where life could be tough, but the people were even tougher. You had to be tough, because if you weren’t you could easily get run over by life’s challenges. That environment taught me resilience, confidence, respect, and the importance of standing up for yourself while never forgetting where you came from. Those streets didn’t just raise me — they prepared me.
Growing up taught me to work hard, respect others, stand tall and never forget where I came from. It gave me a deep appreciation for the people, culture, and history that make Washington D.C. unlike any city in the world. Today, I’m proud to share this city with visitors from across the globe. As a licensed Washington D.C. tour guide and featured on Netflix’s Queer Eye, I don’t just point out landmarks — I tell the stories behind them.
I connect the past with the present. I bring history to life with humor, passion, and the perspective of someone who grew up calling this city home. When you ride with me, you’re not just taking a tour. You’re stepping into Washington through the eyes of a local who has lived its history, felt its heartbeat, and is proud to share its soul.
This isn’t just sightseeing. It’s an experience. It’s a story. It’s Washington D.C. The Iconick way.
A passion for local history
My passion for history didn’t begin when I was young — it grew as I matured. As I got older, I realized that history is more than dates and monuments. It’s the story of who we are, where we’ve been, and the lessons that shape where we are going. I came to understand that knowing history doesn’t just help you understand the past — it helps prepare you for the future.
That realization sparked a lifelong commitment to learning and sharing the incredible stories of Washington D.C. and the nation’s history. Every monument, memorial, neighborhood, and landmark has a story worth telling, and I believe those stories have the power to educate, inspire, and connect people from all walks of life.
Today, that passion is at the heart of every tour I give. My goal isn’t simply to show you Washington — it’s to help you experience its history in a way that’s engaging, meaningful, and unforgettable.
When the guiding began
My journey into tour guiding started in an unexpected way.
Right after graduating high school, I earned my commercial driver’s license (CDL) and began driving double-decker sightseeing tour buses. At the time, the tours were led by a recorded narration that played as we drove through the city. I enjoyed being behind the wheel, but I never imagined that guiding would become my life’s passion.
One day, the company offered a free tour guide training class. They explained that if you earned your Washington, D.C. tour guide license, you’d receive additional opportunities and benefits. I thought, “That’s a great deal — why not?”
About 16 drivers enrolled in the class. During the training, something unexpected happened. Our instructor, Bob Waters, pulled three of us aside. He looked at us and said, “You three have what it takes to become exceptional tour guides.”
I laughed and replied, “Bob, I don’t know that much history.”
He smiled and said something I’ll never forget: “Nick, you can learn history. You can’t teach personality. It’s not what you know — it’s how you treat people, and you were born with personality.”
At first, I was skeptical. Then Bob told me how much money he was making as a tour guide. I looked at him and said, “Where are the books?”
Those words changed the course of my life. He gave me two books and said, “The rest is up to you. Buy biographies about these presidents and historical figures. Watch the History Channel. Spend time with the best tour guides. Study every chance you get. If you want to be great, you have to separate yourself from everyone else.”
I took those words to heart. I read everything I could get my hands on, watched documentaries, studied biographies, learned from experienced guides, and challenged myself to become better every single day.
What started behind the wheel of a double-decker bus became a lifelong passion for sharing the stories, history, and spirit of Washington, D.C. with visitors from around the world.
How it became part of the brand
The name came to me almost instantly. My name is Nick, and people travel to Washington D.C. to see the world’s most iconic sights. I thought — “Iconick.” It was the perfect combination of who I am and what I do. That’s how Iconick Tours was born.
Starting my own company wasn’t just about running a business — it was about creating a brand built on personality, storytelling, exceptional service, and unforgettable experiences. I wanted every guest to feel like they were exploring Washington D.C. with a knowledgeable friend, not just another tour guide.

His approach
A Love of People
One of my greatest passions has always been people.
No matter someone’s race, nationality, culture, or background, I believe everyone has a story worth hearing and deserves to feel welcome. I’ve always had a genuine ability to connect with people, creating an atmosphere where strangers quickly become friends and conversations come naturally.
Meeting people from around the world isn’t just part of my job — it’s one of the greatest joys of my life. Every guest brings a unique perspective, and I enjoy learning just as much as I enjoy sharing the history and stories of Washington, D.C.
That love for people is the foundation of every tour I lead. My goal is for every guest to feel valued, comfortable, and like family. Long after the tour ends, I want them to leave with more than great photos. I want them to leave feeling like they’ve made a real connection with both the city and the person who showed it to them.
For me, every tour begins with history — but it always ends with people.

So... How Did I Become the DC Tour God™?
Origin of the nickname
As my career grew, more people began requesting me by name. They weren’t just looking for a tour — they wanted the experience. A guest on my bus once said, “I’ve been on many tours, but you’re more like a Tour God.”
That’s when I knew it was time to build something of my own.
Guest reactions that made it real
Then came the life-changing opportunity. Being featured on the Netflix series Queer Eye introduced my story and my passion to an even wider audience. Soon, more high-profile guests, families, professionals, and visitors from around the world started reaching out — not because they wanted to see Washington, but because they wanted the Iconick experience.
That was the confirmation I needed. I wasn’t just building a tour company — I was building a legacy.
What it means to Nick
Today, every tour reflects the values that have guided me from the beginning: treat every guest like family, never stop learning, always go the extra mile, and create an experience people will remember long after they’ve left our nation’s capital.
Because anybody can show you the monuments. The Iconick experience helps you feel the story behind them.
